Treatment
Hybrid treatment
Hybrid treatment is a single orthodontic plan that uses both braces and clear aligners, each for the part of the work it handles well. A common pattern is braces first, for the movements that need the most control, followed by aligners for the finishing stages.
It is not a separate product. It is a way of planning treatment around your teeth instead of around one appliance, and whether it suits you is discussed at your complimentary Smile Analysis.
Awaiting clinical review by Dr. Camille J. Rose Kong, orthodontist.
Who is hybrid treatment for?
Hybrid treatment may be worth discussing if:
- Some of your teeth need movements that brackets control more predictably, such as rotations or vertical changes.
- You would like to spend part of your treatment in removable aligners.
- You are in aligners and a particular tooth is not moving as planned.
- You have a demanding stretch ahead, such as a wedding or a new job, and would prefer aligners for that period.
- Your orthodontist believes a combination will give you a steadier path to your planned result.
How does hybrid treatment work?
A hybrid plan is mapped out at the start, so you know which stage you are in and what comes next.
Your Smile Analysis
We take photographs and digital records of your teeth and bite, and your orthodontist explains whether braces, aligners, or a combination suits you, and why.
A single plan, in stages
Your written plan shows which stage uses braces, which uses aligners, roughly when the switch is expected, and how progress will be checked along the way.
The braces stage
Brackets and wires handle the movements that need the most control. You visit every several weeks for adjustments, as you would with braces alone.
The aligner stage
Once those movements are complete, the brackets come off and you move into a series of clear aligners for the remaining corrections and fine detail.
Retention
When your teeth reach their planned positions, retainers hold them there. Retention is part of the plan from the first conversation.
How long does hybrid treatment take?
The total length of a hybrid plan depends on what your teeth need, just as it does with braces or aligners alone.
The point of a hybrid plan is to use the right appliance at the right stage, not to shorten treatment. Your orthodontist gives you an estimated range at your Smile Analysis; your plan may differ, and we explain any change as it happens.
When do braces change to aligners?
The move from braces to aligners, or the other way round, is based on how your teeth are responding, not on a date in the calendar. Your orthodontist checks your progress against the plan at each visit and tells you when the next stage is due.
You are always part of that decision. If your circumstances change during treatment, tell us and we will look at whether the plan can reasonably change with them.
What does each stage ask of me?
- During the braces stage: clean carefully around the brackets, pause very hard or sticky foods, and keep adjustment appointments.
- During the aligner stage: wear your trays for most of the day and night, take them out only to eat, drink and clean, and change trays on schedule.
- Throughout: call or text us if anything breaks, is lost, or stops fitting.
Questions we are often asked
Can I choose when to switch from braces to aligners?
The timing is guided by how your teeth are moving, and your orthodontist recommends when the switch is ready. Your preferences are always part of that conversation.
Is hybrid treatment more complicated?
It uses two appliances, but it is one plan with one set of goals. Each stage is explained before it begins, so you always know what is happening and why.
How is the cost of a hybrid plan explained?
Every plan, hybrid or not, comes with a written explanation of fees, your insurance benefits if you have them, and how payment works, before you decide. We do not publish fees online because they depend on your plan.
Does hybrid treatment work for teens?
It can. For a teen, the aligner stage works well only if the trays are worn consistently, so we talk that through openly with you and your teen.
